1969 Mustang 302 Convertible
Scope of Work
This car was purchased as a special gift to commemorate the owner’s wife’s birth year. After discussing the vehicle’s history and the fact that it had been sitting non-operational for an extended period, we developed a comprehensive scope of work to return the car to reliable, road-ready condition.
Of particular importance was preserving the car’s original appearance while incorporating modern improvements for reliability and drivability.
Wherever possible, replacement components were selected to maintain a factory-correct look. Hoses, spark plug wires, and visible electrical wiring were replaced with correct concours-style components, allowing the upgrades to blend naturally with the vehicle’s original character.
The project began with a comprehensive engine bay restoration, including rust mitigation, electrical repairs, correction of engine leaks, and replacement of aging belts and hoses. The non-operational braking system was completely addressed, with power brakes added and new brake components installed at all four wheels to significantly improve stopping performance and driving confidence.
Once the mechanical work was completed, attention turned to the interior. Incorrect carpeting was replaced, the dash color was corrected, and non-operational gauges were repaired or replaced while maintaining the original appearance. Heat and sound-deadening materials were installed throughout key areas of the interior to reduce heat transfer through the firewall and transmission tunnel, creating a quieter and more comfortable driving environment.
The sound system was also upgraded with a new stereo, speakers, and powered subwoofer to provide improved audio quality while remaining discreet and complementary to the classic interior.
The end result is a car that retains the appearance and character of the original while benefiting from carefully selected improvements in reliability, safety, comfort, and drivability.
Body & Paint
Completed extensive rust mitigation throughout the engine bay, followed by bead blasting and refinishing of the intake and exhaust manifolds to restore and protect their surfaces. The dash pad was restored and color-matched for a more cohesive, factory-correct appearance. Rust mitigation was also performed on the glove compartment door and surrounding trim, with the affected areas refinished to improve both appearance and long-term protection.
Mechanical
Rebuilt the carburetor and installed a PerTronix electronic ignition system with a new distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, and plug wires to improve reliability and engine performance. Gauge sending units were replaced, along with a new alternator, hoses, and belts.
The customer wanted an engine bay they would be proud to show, so additional attention was given to its overall appearance and presentation. Chrome valve covers and a matching air cleaner were installed to give the engine compartment a clean, finished look while maintaining the car’s classic character.
The braking system was completely refreshed with new brakes at all four wheels, along with the addition of power brakes and a new master cylinder. The complete system was properly bled and adjusted to improve braking performance and confidence on the road. New engine and transmission mounts were also installed to provide proper drivetrain support and reduce unwanted movement and vibration.
Electrical
Much of the existing engine bay wiring was outdated and showing signs of age and previous repairs. A new front wiring harness and gauge harness were installed, along with a new firewall connection to provide a cleaner and more reliable electrical system. Battery cables, alternator wiring, and the wiring for the headlights, turn signals, and running lights were also replaced.
Replacement gauges were installed while maintaining the car’s original appearance. The gauges and exterior lighting were upgraded to LED for improved visibility and safer nighttime driving.
The audio system was upgraded with a new radio, speakers, and powered subwoofer. New dedicated power and ground wiring was installed to ensure clean, reliable electrical connections and consistent system performance.
The power convertible top wiring was inspected and evaluated, and electrical connections throughout the vehicle were cleaned up, repaired, and properly secured to improve overall reliability.
Chassis / Suspension / Brakes
The braking system was thoroughly inspected and upgraded with power brakes, a new master cylinder, and all-new brake hardware. The brake drums were resurfaced to ensure proper operation and improved stopping performance. New Koni shocks were also installed to enhance ride quality, handling, and overall road control.
New engine and transmission mounts were installed to provide improved drivetrain support and stability while reducing unwanted movement and vibration. Together, these upgrades significantly improved braking performance, suspension control, and overall drivability.
Interior
While the original dash pad was in good condition, years of sun exposure had caused significant fading and discoloration, requiring restoration to return it to its original appearance. The dash trim, gauge cluster trim, and center console trim were also showing their age, and several of the original gauges were no longer operational.
The worn components and non-operational gauges were replaced with correct, period-appropriate replacements to preserve the car’s vintage appearance. An updated GT-style steering wheel was also installed, completing the interior refresh while maintaining the classic character of the vehicle.
